Christmas shopping is hard. I learned this lesson at the age of 12 when I bought my mother what I thought was the most glam gift in the entire PX. (The Post Exchange, for all of you non army brats, happens to be THE place to go shopping on Post. Ok, fine, it’s the only place to go shopping. And glam is not really a word typically associated with the experience.)
I digress.
As I was wandering around aimlessly wondering what to get my mother for Christmas, I stumbled into the designer perfume shelf. And there it was. Chloé. In all of its rectangular and amber glory. Not only would I buy this most luxurious of fragrances for my mother, I decided right then and there I would also name my first daughter after this nugget of high class heaven.
I took my allotted “mom gift money” and crumpled it up on the conveyer belt (I said it was the PX), right next to what I knew would be the gift to win Christmas.
Finally the big day arrived. She was going to open it. I had even wrapped it in the same special paper I wrapped my hamster’s carrot in. Ok. She’s opening it. My smile grew with the anticipation…until. Until she removed the last shred of paper to reveal that beautiful white and gold box. I felt my expression begin to mimic hers as my smile dropped. The disgust was evident.
Apparently my mom hated that fragrance as much as I hated Midnight Mass. Apparently her fourth grade teacher bathed in it before coming to school and slapping her student’s knuckles with a ruler or something of the sort. Needless to say the Chloé went back to the store and I’m sure she exchanged it for L’Air Du Temps or Cinnabar or something awful.
Don’t let this happen to you.
Instead, shop for yourself.
That’s what we do here at The National Beauty. Because, who knows what you want more than you? And frankly you deserve to get what you want.
Over the next few days we’ll be sharing our staff picks for ourselves, but they work perfectly for other people too. You know if you’re feeling generous.

*Two side notes:
1.I do have a daughter named Chloe. A few years ago I bought her a bottle of her namesake for her 16th birthday. She kind of loved it
2. No matter what this article says my mom is pretty awesome.
